When I wrote the pattern for the baby blanket using the shell pattern, I quickly made up a pretty baby bonnet to match, I promised I would write out the free crochet pattern for the Baby Bonnet. And I am pleased I have finally gotten it finished. Soft Shells Baby Bonnet Baby Shell Bonnet Free Crochet Pattern I have made this baby’s bonnet using a Double Knit Kiddies Supersoft approx. 50 grms. Terminology used = US. 3.00mm hook = new-born- 3 months 14 inches round 4.00mm hook = 3-6 months (17 inches around) Tapestry needle for finishing off and coloured ribbon of choice Ch= chain Sc=single crochet Dc=Double Crochet Sk= Skip Slst= slip stitch 1 Shell=5 double crochet in 1 stitch Tip: Always TURN your work before chain to start next rows, this gives a lovely neat finish along the edges of the back of bonnet To start the bonnet beginning at the bottom of bonnet at neck area Ch 20. Row1: skip first 2ch, 5 dc in next, *skip next 2 ch, sc, skip 2, 5dc in next* (repeat **ending with a shell in very last ch) (4 shells made) Row 2: Turn work. Ch 3. (Counts as 1st dc) 2dc into the base of the chain3 (1/2 shell made), *skip 2, sc, skip 2, 5dc in next {1 shell made)*, repeat ** finishing with, skip 2, sc, skip 2, 3 dc in last stitch available. (3 shells and 2 Half shells made= 4 shells total) Repeat Row 1 and 2 for 15 rows OR until back of bonnet work measures 5 inches TURN Row 16 – Slst along 6 stitches to middle of 1st whole shell, work 3 FULL shells. TURN Row 17 – slip stitches, work 2 middle shells , TURN, Row 18- slip stitches, work 1 middle shell slip stitches. finish off. 1 2 Working the Sides and Top of Bonnet Working evenly around the sides and top of bonnet working in the pattern Join yarn. NOTE: Start with a ch 3, 2dc in base of ch3, *sk2, sc, sk2, 5dc* continue working like this ** when reach the first corner make sure you have a sc the corners, and carry on with the sk 2,sc,sk, 5dc along the top, sc in corner, and working in pattern down the sides. You should have 10 FULL shells and 2 half shells around) Row 2: Turn work. Ch 3. (Counts as 1st dc) 2dc into the base of the chain3 (1/2 shell made), *skip 2, sc, 5dc in next {1 shell made)*, repeat ** finishing with, skip 2, sc, skip 2, 3 dc in last stitch available. (3 shells and 2 half shells made) Row 3: skip first 2ch, 5 dc in next, *skip next 2 ch, sc, and skip 2, 5dc in next* (repeat **ending with a shell in very last ch) (4 shells made) Continue working 2 & 3 alternate for 8 rows or Finish on RS I like to finish off the bonnet by working 4 extra dc in the half shell at ends (this is where the ties and ribbons will go for tying) . Keep working around the bonnets bottom edge by neatly Single Crochet Around the neck edge. Finishing with the 4 extra dc corner. Fasten off securely. Thread all loose ends and make easy tie chords for your bonnet.
