In addition to having several mileage scales and compass roses, these have holding patterns (and their entries) printed right on them. You are expected to use a procedure that will keep you within the protected airspace of the holding pattern.

You're flying on a cross country IFR and all of a sudden air traffic control announces the bad news that your destination airport is expecting delays. This useful tool shows a pilot which entry is appropriate given the assigned holding radial, making it a superb learning tool.

Chop the holding pattern in half as shown (see the red line). If you are entering from the fat side, its always a direct entry.

The three holding pattern entries are designed so that an aircraft can enter a hold without excessive maneuvering. Depending on where you enter the holding pattern, you will need to follow an entry procedure.
